WHITE RIVER VALLEY A one vehicle accident on Washington County 183, known locally as Durham Road, took the life of Johnny Upshaw, 38, of Springdale on Sunday afternoon.
Washington County Sheriff Tim Helder announced Monday the sheriff’s department received a call to the accidentabout 5:40 p.m.
J.D. DeMotte, Elkins fire chief, said he and his staff were the first responders at the accident.
“We got the call about 5:46 p.m. and got there at 5:52 p.m.,” DeMotte said. “We found one person partially trapped under the vehicle, obviously deceased. We then searched the surrounding area to make sure no one else had been in thevehicle and was injured. We remained there with the deputies until the Washington County coroner got there about 6:53 p.m.”
Helder said in a press release, a preliminary investigation indicated Upshaw was traveling northbound on Durham Road in a 1978 Chevrolet pickup when it appeared he accelerated rapidly, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The pickup went off the north side of Durham Road and hit a tree. After hitting the tree the vehicle turned over onto the driver’s side. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Durham Road is about 4.5 miles from Elkins.
