WHITE RIVER VALLEY Greenland Elementary School began its new after-school tutoring program to provide reading assistance to elementary students.
The program is offered at Greenland Elementary for students who live in the Greenland area and in Winslow for pupils who live in that area. The sessions will be held for one hour after school on Tuesdays, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Greenland and 4:30-5:30 p.m. for Winslow.
The district had hoped to reopen the former Winslow school gym and cafeteria building for the program under a partnership with some community residents. The program was held in Winslow but moved to the city library on Tuesday, Barton said.
Volunteers getting the gym building ready for use encountered a problem with a water leak, Barton said.
“You know the old adage. You go find something wrong and then you find a bigger [problem],” Barton said.
Nine students signed up to participate in the Winslow program.
