— Elkins had its chances in the second half, but a costly fumble killed the Elks’ comeback hopes in a 28-7 loss to Mansfield on the road Friday night.

Elkins (2-3, 1-2 1-3A) drove down to the 4-yard line early in the fourth quarter, but a fumble in the end zone resulted ina touchback and allowed Mansfield (4-2, 2-1) to build on its 21-7 lead and hold off the upset-minded Elks.

“We played hard throughout, and I was really pleased with our defense in the second half,” Elkins coach Aaron Clark said. Elkins finished with only 207 yards of offense, and WestonCurry accounted for the only Elks touchdown on a 27-yard run in the third quarter. Quarterback Robert Teague led the Elks with 136 yards of total offense. Teague finished with 45 rushing yards.

Mansfield built a 21-0 lead at halftime with two touchdowns in the final 7 minutes of the secondquarter.
