ELKINS During the spring term of the 1988-1989 school year the state's major veteran's groups participated in the first state-coordinated effort to introduce Arkansas school children to flag etiquette and to the proper way to show respect to the American flag.
This program is supported by the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs, the Arkansas Department of Education and the Governor's Office.
The flag education program has been so successful that the veteran's groups are continuing to support this effort and will do so again during the 2009-2010 school year.
Arkansas County Veterans Service Officer representatives and various veterans' organizations, including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, and Military Order of the World Wars, will present the program to fifth-grade students in our public schools. The Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs is again coordinating the effort between these organizations and Arkansas schools.
The success of this program has depended on the voluntary efforts of hundreds of Arkansans. Representatives from one of the veteran's groups in the area will be contacting the districts to request approximately forty-five minutes of classroom time to make a presentation on flag etiquette.
