DURHAM DISPATCH The Bactrian Hoard

Posted: November 5, 2009 6 a.m.

One of the tragedies of the Bushian Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has been the loss of so much valuable material collected in the museums and other places, not to mention the ancient sites we’ve bombed.

VIEW FROM THE CHEAP SEATS Test scores too important

We all have had favorite teachers. The men and women employed at every level of the educational system open minds and ensure quality of life, economic prosperity, and our lasting democracy. An informed electorate is essential to every aspect of our lives.

COMMENTARY Governor Should Use Clout

It may well be Gov. Mike Beebe’s chance to do that which no other governor has done — a veritable Nixongoes-to-China moment.

Saudi Arabia wants subsidy for lost oil sales

When you think “chutzpah,” rarely is Saudi Arabia the first association that comes to mind. Chutzpah is a Yiddish word for the quality embodied by the fellow who kills his parents, then asks for mercy because he’s an orphan. Saudis tend to be Muslims. Their affection for things Yiddish is virtually undetectable.

Golf is a game. A rather expensive pastime that takes you from the lows of threeputting to save quadruple bogey to that one sweet shot that will bring you back for another round of torture.

DURHAM DISPATCH Fincher and the Constitution

Posted: October 22, 2009 9:34 a.m.

I have often written of our beloved Constitution. This was mostly when I felt the Bushian/Chenyite Thugs and their Merry Band of Thieves were stealing our civil liberties. Which they did happily for 8 years.

Imagine a widespread E. coli outbreak that sickens millions of Americans. By the next year, the government determines that lax oversight exacerbated the problem and calls for restructured FDA regulations to protect consumers from tainted products.

DURHAM DISPATCH: Let’s not lose

Posted: October 15, 2009 6 a.m.

For some years now pundits have called the fighting in Afghanistan the “Forgotten War.” Bah! White River Meanderings: Granny’s home remedies

One very chilly September day, caused by Big Al’s global warming, I was thinking back over the wide range of stories I have written in my columns.

This week is National Newspaper Week and it made me think about why being in this business is important to me.

DURHAM DISPATCH: You want a revolution?

Posted: October 8, 2009 6 a.m.

The country witnessed shameful events during the Town Hall meetings in August. Mobs shouted down speakers in attempts to be heard. Some carried signs saying the Public Option is socialism, which it isn't. Other signs referred to President Obama as a "Jungle Bunny" or pictured him as Hitler, which reveal the low IQ of many in the mob.

I am for raising taxes of the rich. Those who have the money should pay more. The rich have lived the good life for so long they have become accustomed to more equal treatment that the vast majority of Americans can ever expect to experience. The rich have been having a party and don't mind sending the working class the bill.
