Flag education program begins 21st year in Arkansas

During the spring term of the 1988-1989 school year the state's major veteran's groups participated in the first state-coordinated effort to introduce Arkansas school children to flag etiquette and to the proper way to show respect to the American flag.

Volunteers help at library

Sheila Burnett is the first of many volunteers who will be involved at St. Paul School in various areas this year. Burnett is helping in the school library and plans to volunteer throughout the year working on the Teen Read Program, processing books, helping decorate the library, and assisting with the Parent Center.

Local high school students beat state average on ACT

Average composite scores on the ACT college readiness exam for students in the Prairie Grove and Elkins school districts exceeded the state average by more than a point. On Wednesday, the ACT group released information about national and state trends on the results from the spring 2009 tests. The ACT exam is made up of four subject tests, which are English, math, reading and science. Students can score 1 to 36 on any individual subject test, and the average of all subjects forms the composite score. The state average score for Arkansas was 20.6 and the national average score was 21.1 for 2009 high school graduates.

Greenland school holds registration

Greenland Middle School registration /orientation for the 2009-2010 school year is scheduled on Monday, Aug. 10, at the high school cafeteria. This will be a group registration, so it is necessary for all students to attend at the assigned times: 8th grade -- 9 a.m. 7th grade -- 11 a.m. 6th grade -- 2 p.m. 5th grade -- 5:30 p.m During registration, lockers will be assigned and locks will be available for rent at $1. Schedules and student handbooks will be handed out, along with other necessary forms and information.
